Lunch Talk Series with Prof. Leo Carlin and Prof. Dr. Maximilian Reichert
Welcome to Our October Lunch Talk – Special Edition!

Our upcoming Lunch Talk will be hosted by Dr. Stefanie Bärthel, Group Leader (Team NST) from BioMed X, and will feature two talks by leading researchers in cancer biology and immunology.
Talk 01
- Speaker: Prof. Leo Carlin, CRUK Scotland Institute, UK
- Topic: 4D regulation of myeloid cells in cancer
About Prof. Leo Carlin:
Leo Carlin is a Professor of Leukocyte Dynamics at the University of Glasgow and a Group Leader at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute (CRUK SI) where he leads Leukocyte Dynamics cancer immunology group and the Beatson Advanced Imaging Resource (BAIR) team.
The Leukocyte Dynamics Group aim to uncover how immune cells, in particular, the myeloid cells of the innate immune system, can exert both pro- and anti- tumour activity and how this can be understood and/or manipulated for better patient treatment strategies. The BAIR team provides a comprehensive pipeline of advanced microscopy support and intellectual input to address questions from researchers at the Institute and beyond.
Leo did his BSc in Immunology at UCL followed by a PhD imaging the Natural Killer (NK) cell immunological synapse with Prof Dan Davis at Imperial. He furthered his enthusiasm for imaging NK and monocyte dynamics during post-docs with Prof Tony Ng and Prof Frédéric Geissmann’s at KCL respectively. This cemented a life-long passion for studying myeloid cell behaviour within the context of specialised tissue architecture (e.g. the capillaries of the lung and liver).
Talk 02
- Speaker: Prof. Dr. Maximilian Reichert, School of Medicine & Health, Technical University of Munich
- Topic: From Tumor Cell States to Multicellular Ecosystems: Decoding Plasticity in Pancreatic Cancer
About Prof. Maximilian Reichert:
Maximilian Reichert, MD, is Professor of Translational Pancreatic Cancer Research at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Deputy Director of the TUM Center for Organoid Systems, and a senior physician in the Department of Internal Medicine II.
He heads the Translational Pancreatic Cancer Research Center and the Pancreatic Cancer Clinic at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich TUM. His research focuses on cellular plasticity and intratumoral heterogeneity in pancreatic cancer, particularly tumor cell-state transitions, metastatic dissemination, and treatment resistance. His laboratory develops patient-derived and engineered organoid models to study dynamic cancer phenotypes and their interactions with the tumor microenvironment. His work aims to translate mechanistic insights into therapeutic vulnerabilities and precision-oncology strategies for clinical evaluation.
