FAQ – Boot Camp

The BioMed X Boot Camp is a five-day intensive scientific collaboration designed to bring together the most promising applicants in a highly interactive, fast-paced, and multidisciplinary environment.

What happens at the boot camp and what should the candidates expect?

The BioMed X Boot Camp is a five-day intensive scientific collaboration designed to bring together the most promising applicants in a highly interactive, fast-paced, and multidisciplinary environment. During the week, candidates work closely in newly formed teams to develop and refine innovative research concepts under the guidance of coaches from both BioMed X and the industry partner.

Participants should expect full working days, continuous scientific discussions, rapid idea development, and dynamic team interactions throughout the week.

The boot camp is not only about the final scientific idea, but also about demonstrating your potential as a future team member and scientific leader. Throughout the process, Group Leader candidates, coaches, and evaluators closely observe how participants collaborate, respond to feedback, communicate ideas, solve problems, and contribute within interdisciplinary teams.

  • Developing and defending innovative hypotheses under time pressure
  • Translating complex scientific ideas into clear and convincing presentations
  • Understanding how research proposals are presented differently to academic and funding-oriented audiences
  • Working effectively in multidisciplinary teams to combine complementary expertise
  • Refining communication skills, from high-level project strategy to detailed slide preparation and scientific storytelling

On the last day, teams present their final project proposals to a jury, which recommends the candidates to be interviewed for each role and launch the new research project at BioMed X.

What happens to my original project proposal once the boot camp begins?

Your original project proposal serves as the basis for your application and selection to participate in the boot camp. During the boot camp week, participants will be assigned to interdisciplinary teams and work together to evaluate and enhance their original ideas from different technical perspectives, ultimately creating a new or refined project proposal collaboratively.

While your original idea will help shape discussions and inspire aspects of the team project, the main focus of the boot camp is teamwork, creativity, and the co-development of an innovative proposal that the team will present at the end of the week.

What is the interview process following the boot camp?

Following the boot camp, selected candidates for the Group Leader position will be invited to a final virtual interview within the following 1–2 weeks. This interview is the final stage of the evaluation process. Group Leader candidates advancing to this stage will receive additional details regarding the interview format and schedule shortly after the boot camp concludes.

Once a Group Leader has been hired and the contract is signed, they may extend offers for Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Assistant positions to any of the candidates who participated in the boot camp, regardless of team assignment. We therefore encourage Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Assistant candidates to actively engage throughout the week and interact beyond their own teams.

What is the recommended dress code during the boot camp?

The dress code throughout most of the boot camp week is casual and comfortable, while remaining appropriate for a professional environment.

For the final presentations to the jury on Friday, we recommend business or business-casual attire to reflect the professional nature of the presentations and discussions. Please also keep local cultural and venue expectations in mind when planning your clothing.

What should participants expect regarding the workload and schedule during the boot camp week?

The boot camp week is designed to be highly interactive, stimulating, collaborative, and fast-paced. Participants should expect full working days, dynamic team interactions, and focused project development throughout the week.

In particular, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings may involve extended working sessions as teams refine their ideas and prepare their final presentations. While organizers will support teams throughout the process, participants should be prepared for a demanding schedule. That said, staying up late is never mandatory, and effective teamwork and organization will allow teams to manage their workload more comfortably.

How are teams formed during the boot camp?

Teams are formed through a mutual preference-based matching process designed to create balanced and collaborative working groups.

Throughout Monday, all participants will have the opportunity to get to know one another through informal interactions during breaks and meals, and short individual presentations introducing their scientific background, personal interests, working style, and motivations.

Following these interactions, Group Leader candidates rank the Postdoctoral Researchers and Research Assistant candidates based on whom they would most like to work with. Similarly, Postdoctoral Researchers and Research Assistants rank both the Group Leader candidates and their fellow participants according to their collaboration preferences.

These rankings are processed through a matching algorithm to form the final teams. The team compositions are announced on Tuesday morning, after which the collaborative project work officially begins.

When do you generally start inviting people for the boot camp?

Usually within 2–4 weeks after the deadline, we get back to all candidates with the results of our evaluation committee.
