In the next session of The Diary of a Scientist, we’ll hear from PD Mojca Frank Bertoncelj, MD, PhD, whose remarkable career spans clinical medicine, translational research, and space life sciences.
Mojca is currently Head of Research at the the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Her expertise encompasses immunology, functional genomics, and integrative biology of human tissues, with a particular focus on autoimmune diseases.
In April 2026, she entered the fascinating field of space life sciences. Together with a multidisciplinary team operating across gravitational research platforms, including parabolic flights, suborbital rockets, and the International Space Station (ISS), she investigates how changes in gravity affect the human body, particularly the immune system. Her vision is to translate discoveries made in space into biomedical innovations that improve human health on Earth. 🛰️
Mojca earned her medical degree as valedictorian and completed a PhD in Biomedicine at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She subsequently obtained her habilitation and the title of Privatdozent (PD) at the University of Zurich.
After winning the BioMed X Boot Camp in 2021, Mojca joined the BioMed X Institute in Heidelberg as a Group Leader. There, she led #TeamPTA, investigating protective tissue factors in autoimmune diseases in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine.
